The best books start with a map

Walking the Gobi by Helen Thayer

It's a reread.

Been a few years and I look forward to clearing my head with a chapter before bed.

  1. I loved this book, as well as the mind-boggling Polar Dream - and I completely concur with your comment about maps. My favorite reads are of expeditions in or through challenging country and always have me dragging atlases onto my lap to fill out the details from a book's map(I don't enjoy reading at my desktop w/google maps).

I've always hoped there was one more book to come, perhaps a general memoir of their lives. Thank you for a reminder of this author. I have no memory of 3 Among the Wolves though I'm sure I would have read it. Can't wait to get back to them all now.

  5. Interesting - three of us have read Helen Thayer and she is not a mainstream author. Based on the well written discussion that goes on here, I would guess this is an intelligent, educated crowd. Maybe that's why we don't get fooled.

  6. I should say my favorite books start with maps. The "best" is an absolute and this is just one womans opinion.

  7. I'm curious about the finances of all her adventures. How did they fund their many expeditions?!

I'm interested in her other books now...what an inspiration!
