communitarian

On May 3rd I leave the Department of Community Development to focus on being more of a communitarian.

Though the term communitarianism is of 20th-century origin, it is derived from the 1840s term communitarian, which was coined by Goodwyn Barmby to refer to one who was a member or advocate of a communalist society. The modern use of the term is a redefinition of the original sense. Many communitarians trace their philosophy to earlier thinkers. The term is primarily used in two senses:

Philosophical communitarianism considers classical liberalism to be ontologically and epistemologically incoherent, and opposes it on those grounds. Unlike classical liberalism, which construes communities as originating from the voluntary acts of pre-community individuals, it emphasizes the role of the community in defining and shaping individuals. Communitarians believe that the value of community is not sufficiently recognized in liberal theories of justice. Ideological communitarianism is characterized as a radical centrist ideology that is sometimes marked by leftism on economic issues and moralism or conservatism on social issues. This usage was coined recently. When the term is capitalized, it usually refers to the Responsive Communitarian movement of Amitai Etzioni and other philosophers.

Where to park myself?

Viewing conditions will be best in the mid-Atlantic, specifically for parts of Pennsylvania and the Delmarva. Most of the country will have poor to fair views as a result of cloud cover, with areas further south not experiencing the aurora at all. A pocket of fair conditions sits over southeastern Oregon and the southwest corner of Idaho. A swath of partly cloudy conditions will also spread over a section of the Ohio Valley for parts of Michigan, Indiana and Illinois. Ohio will experience fair to good viewing conditions. For the rest of the country conditions will be poor.

This same article has other locations listed for better viewing though...where to go?!

Cell phones, GPS, and radios beware!

A solar flare that occurred around 2 a.m. Thursday morning may create a spectacular display of northern lights Saturday evening.

The radiation from such a flare may cause radio wave disturbances to electronics such as cell phones, GPS and radios, causing services to occasionally cut in and out.....oh my!!!

It's ok Preppers, you don't need to feverishly waiting for society to fall on.this flares account.

On the bright side...

The flare is also expected to cause vibrant northern lights from the Arctic as far south as New York, the Dakotas, Washington and Michigan, with a smaller possibility of it going into Pennsylvania and Iowa, even Kansas. The lights are currently estimated for 8 p.m. EDT Saturday arrival, with a possible deviation of up to seven hours. If the radiation hits much after dark settles on the East Coast the lights may be missed and will instead only be visible for the West.

Hello aurora borealis!!!

This just might be worth the drive.

lives her life one way...and pities those who dont...

Wait...palmerton pa is 2 miles from the the Appalachian Trail? She moved 2,000+ miles away. Oh my...Jenna must spend half her time pittying herself at one point or another.

Grow don't judge.

Your past is a portion of what you pity in others. Forgive yourself and don't mind others...they don't pity themselves.

you may be a lost cause.....if ya dont agree with jenna woginrich.

Correction...and possibly a son of bitch.

Woginrich shared a link. Yesterday at 9:33am ·

This makes me amazingly happy. If it doesn't make you fall in love with humanity all over again than you are a lost cause, possibly a sonofabitch, and should move out of the way so us animals can dance.

'I have decided that every so often I will make a post in honor of reader contributions. Kinda like an NPR fund drive. This is a way for the readership to put a value on the last 2 months of words and photos, and if they are willing, make a small donation to the farm through the link below. This form of reader contribution is really, really important. It helps keep me and this place going'

Gosh...I just think it's wrong to ask for donations to support the way you've chosen to live. Maybe you should get a part-time job.

Jenna March 16, 2013 at 7:29 PM
Ginger, I do not depend on blog donations to run this farm. They are not how I make a living.

...donations are really really important and helps keep the place going...but she doesn't depend (or need?) donations to make a living?

So why actively ask?

Opportunistic living, taking advantage one reader at a time.

Blogging is interesting. This new wave farming/homesteading is interesting. The mix of the two has become frightening.  We have jenna here who hosts prepper workshops one weekend and request donations for animal feed the next. Hmmm...she doesn't need donations to run the farm but makes a point to let readers know it goes towards the bare necessities.

Jenna: 'We all have different morals. Me, for instance: I have no problem accepting a twenty dollar donation and using it to buy feed for pigs I write about online.'

How in the world does one need assistance purchasing hay getting paid as well as she does?

6 hour rabbit workshop - 15 attendants @ $125 per person = $312 a hour/$1,875 a day! Not bad, not bad at all. Add freelance, book royalties, donations, sponsors, paid ads etc and there should be no excuse to ask for money to feed livestock. Don't buy what you can't feed.

I fear the true farmer is an endangered species. The man or woman who comes over to help in a pinch, who wont charge for advise.

With her income and property why oh why are dairy goats kept in a small pen with zero grazing? Why oh why are pigs raised in a stall with no opportunity to break soil with their snouts? Why oh why are rabbits in dog crates.

Invest in some fencing and start raising animals proper.
