Your friend needs to buy, and use, proper PPE. When people depend on you, you have to do everything you can to make sure you will be there for them. If he gets his head smashed in, or cuts his leg, it would be a disaster for his family. It may not look cool to wear all that gear, but being responsible doesn't always mean being cool. My concern comes from being involved in both tree care and logging for twenty years.
