Okay folks, here it is: I need a truck. My current truck, the Dakota, has been demoted to the role of farm truck, both by myself and the fine state of New York. That means the truck is still insured, but it isn’t allowed to leave a 25-mile radius of the farm and should only be used for farm work (delivering animals, getting hay, etc). It’s just a beater that I kept beating and it is on her last legs…. it is time to get something dependable, cheap, and trusty.
I found this girl on Craigslist. A 1989 Ford f150! She’s got 4WD, barely any rust, and a NEW transmission! She’s for sale for 2 grand. A truck in this good of shape for that price is a STEAL and exactly what I need for both farm and writing gigs (speaking events, signings, etc). The guys selling it is a musician in Connecticut and we spoke on the phone and worked out the details. This baby is coming to Cold Antler if I can wrangle up the funds this weekend!
I planning on buying this used truck outright. It’s safer, easy and cheap to fix, and honestly… it’s my dream truck. I also am done buying new vehicles, it just isn’t my reality and a payment plan at a dealership isn’t in my budget.
But I don’t have the money for her. That’s where you guys come in. I am asking for help with this loan, which to be funded requires that fifteen people loan me $25 a piece for it to qualify. Note - this is a LOAN, not a kickstarter or crowd funding. You get your money paid back to you, automatically deposited back into your account as I make the small monthly payments to Kiva.
So I’m asking for you to consider making a small loan to help this farm get road worthy again?

  2. Let me get this straight.

She lets her 2000-whatever Dakota go to pot because she can't afford repairs so the solution is to buy a 26 year old truck for two grand? And now she's going to maintain, register, and insure two trucks? Why not invest 2k into the Dakota? Sounds like she's going to buy it sight unseen -- never mind test drive it. This "new" ancient truck might look clean but the frame could be rotten as well as the brake and fuel lines.....Holy shit is she stupid.

She intends to use this truck to go to speaking events and signings--- hope her speaking fee covers the gas money on this guzzler!

And the money is rolling in!

    1. Better yet, why not buy a tiny, fuel efficient car. If NY says she can keep the old truck for farm use, that would serve her better. She can still drive the older truck into town to get feed. A little car that sips gas is a much better choice for her. Better yet, a tiny hatchback. You can move feed in those. I've done that myself, back when I could only afford one tiny vehicle and would never dream of begging to get a second one. Sometimes you have to make due with what you have. The only thing that makes sense is that Jenna must have a truck because of her image. She can't possibly be seen driving a car. Only poodles drive cars.

  3. On the kiva loan site it says she is using the new truck for farm work-- like get feed and hay and the Dakota will be a farm truck........she has six acres what the hell is she gonna do, use it like a motorized wheelbarrow?

If it's not going to leave her property again why wouldn't she sell it? She can sell it outright to someone who could fix it up or get a few hundred from the junk yard.

The Jenna Show gets crazier and crazier.

    1. New York state might prevent you from selling a vehicle that didn't pass inspection. Does anyone know about that? Who would want to buy a truck that didn't pass! Junk yard is the best bet.

She only needed partial support to be funded by Kiva, from what I understand.

Here's the piece of crap she will now be using for her "good" truck. This is the epitome of a beater. Also-- had a plow on it! Hahahaha! Hello, rusty frame and lines.

  5. If she can afford to do a Kiva loan for a second vehicle maybe she could do one for a new shelter for Merlin. Something with sides.

What a fucking asshole she is.

  6. I'm laughing my butt off! I'm a transmission engineer in the Detroit area and I can tell you a new transmission for that type of truck costs over $2000. A certified rebuilt trans is over $1000, and a used one will cost $800 and up. For a $2250 purchase price, that new trans is only new to that vehicle; probably bought from a wrecking yard. Hope she got the Carfax! I hope she does buy the truck - I'll get a lot of entertainment out this.

She neglected her Dakota to the point it was deemed a beater-- why does she think this one will fare any better under her watch?

  7. And what about her root canal?!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Doesn't she still make payments on that Dakota? I'm stupified by this latest move. Once again, her "toys" come before her animal care responsibilities. No shelter for Merlin or the pigs, no feeders for anyone, raggedy-ass fencing, and that barn is going to cave in at any moment.

Speaking of lying and the root canal in the same sentence. I also simply cannot believe there are such stupid people in the world that would actually donate to someone who refuses to work.

  12. Jenna, you really take the cake! You state that you need 15 people to loan you $25 each, yet your loan amount you ask for is $2250, which means you REALLY want 90 people to each loan you $25. I know math is not your strong point, but even an idiot can figure out that you are trying to fool people. What a scammer!

I am laughing my ass off at your paragraph:
I planning on buying this used truck outright. It’s safer, easy and cheap to fix, and honestly… it’s my dream truck. I also am done buying new vehicles, it just isn’t my reality and a payment plan at a dealership isn’t in my budget. "
THIS IS A LIE! YOU ARE NOT PURCHASING ANYTHING OUTRIGHT! YOU ARE BORROWING MONEY FROM POODLES! You still MUST pay this money back just as if it's a bank loan! I hope these poodles have some legal redress when you default. I can see it now: 90 people showing up at your door to repossess that truck.

When was the last time you bought a new vehicle? You had an old junky Subaru and now the Dodge, which wasn't new either. You really need to keep better track of your lies.

Anyone wanna put money on how long it takes before she defaults?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hahaha! Calm down-- she needed 15 people at $25 to qualify-- she doesn't need to get raise the full amount....the 15 at $25 gets her the money.

      Still! She's insane.

I don't know if you were following as far back as when she got rid of the Subaru but she basically just gave up on it one day much the way she is the Dakota. It wouldn't start so she had it towed away for what sounded like the price of towing! Later, the guy that got it told her he made a lot of money on it. No, kidding-- it was a fairly newish Subaru with not a lot wrong with it.

She has NO SENSE when it comes to money or vehicles.

She kind of just wears stuff out and then throws it away. You have to maintain things if you want them to last-- not her strong suit!

      Delete
    2. Actually, she does need to raise the FULL amount to get ANY funds! She just needed to get 15 of her own poodles to loan her $25 each before Kiva allows her request to be posted for the public to see. She NEEDS a total of 90 suckas to loan her $25 each. Last I checked, she was 70% funded. As they say, a fool and his money are soon parted!

      Per Kiva's FAQ's:
When a loan is posted into the private loan period, the borrower has 15 days to invite the required number of lenders to fund their loan. For loans of $2,500 and under, borrowers must invite five to fifteen lenders, for loans of $2,525 and above, borrowers must invite ten to thirty lenders. Once a borrower reaches the required number of lenders, their loan will be posted to the public Kiva Zip website and have 45 additional days to raise the remaining amount.

If a Kiva Zip loan has not been fully funded after 45 days of public fundraising, it will expire. The loan is removed from the website, any lenders that funded it are refunded their money, and the borrower will receive none of the money.

  15. (d) Farm plate vehicle. The term farm plate vehicle shall mean a motor vehicle, trailer or semitrailer registered pursuant to Vehicle
and Traffic Law section 401(13) and when operated between points
within New York State on public highways connecting portions of a farm or farms, municipal sanitary landfills and licensed motor vehicle repair shops, and traveling by the most direct route, but in no event
further than 25 miles one-way from a point on the farm as designated by the vehicle owner and set forth in an attachment to the vehicle registration:
    (1) between fields, buildings, and facilities managed or operated as part of a single farm enterprise in connection with the production, harvesting, processing or marketing on that farm of crops, livestock, or livestock products produced on that farm; or
    (2) for the purpose of transporting materials from a farm to the nearest available municipal sanitary landfill; or
    (3) for the purposes of transporting the motor vehicle, trailer or semi-trailer to a motor vehicle repair shop licensed pursuant to
the Vehicle and Traffic Law for the repair or adjustment of
equipment provided that, in addition to the route restrictions set forth in the Vehicle and Traffic Law, no such transport shall be authorized:
    (i) if such vehicle has an out-of-service defect relating to
load securement, brake systems, steering components and/or
    coupling devices, or after it has been placed out-of-service;
(ii) on any limited access highway; and
(iii) during the period of one hour before sunset to one hour after sunrise.

What part of this law allows Jenna to legally register either vehicle as a farm vehicle?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I was wondering what the advantage is of having farm plates. And NO, the state of New York does not make you get farm plates. You apply for them, because they're cheaper! Farm plates do not require insurance. Wonder how long it will be before she plows into someone with no insurance.

    New York State regs:

Farm 16490-FR Farm plates are for moving equipment between farms, migrant worker buses, or from farm to dump, or any other farming activity. Vehicles with Farm plates do not require insurance. They are registered for one year and all expire in December. Plates are validated with a plate sticker. A legitimate farm or livestock operation must be owned in order to qualify for these plates, and specific information regarding the use of the vehicle must be provided to the DMV. FA suffix was used on the Empire State base, and the FR suffix is on the current Empire Gold base.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's a huge risk for her to take. If she causes an accident in her can't-get-a-sticker Dakota won't she get sued personally for damages? She could lose everything.

I thought this line was interesting:

"A legitimate farm or livestock operation must be owned in order to qualify for these plates, and specific information regarding the use of the vehicle must be provided to the DMV."

How does someone with a handful of critters in their backyard qualify as a legitimate farm? I'm guessing it doesn't. I'm also guessing she could get in a lot of trouble for this.

    1. You can disagree with her stupid choices all you want, but I can tell you an older Ford is a GOOD truck. Cheap to purchase, cheap to repair and keep on the road. Those trucks (MOST of them) are very dependable and reliable.

Of course, the truck could be rusted out from all the road salt, like you said. BUT, if it has been well cared for, it could be a good truck for many, many more years. Well, that is, if it is taken care of.

    2. I have no issue with older trucks if, as you say, they were taken care of. I would prefer one myself but finding a good one is very difficult. You can be sure she won't be taking care of it. Her attitude towards vehicles seems to be use 'em up and wear 'em out.

LENDER BEWARE: There appears to be NO redress for default.

U.S. borrowers on Kiva Zip must invite lenders from their own network (and/or the network of their Trustee) to fund their loan, before they are able to take advantage of Kiva Zip’s crowd of lenders. We view this as an important measure of the borrower’s trust network and hope these lenders keep the borrower accountable for repaying their loan. For loans of $2,500 and under we require borrowers to invite between 5 and 15 lenders from within their network. For loans of $2,525 and above we require borrowers to invite between 10 and 30 lenders from within their network.

How long do I have to fundraise on Kiva Zip?

When a loan is posted into the private loan period, the borrower has 15 days to invite the required number of lenders to fund their loan. For loans of $2,500 and under, borrowers must invite five to fifteen lenders, for loans of $2,525 and above, borrowers must invite ten to thirty lenders. Once a borrower reaches the required number of lenders, their loan will be posted to the public Kiva Zip website and have 45 additional days to raise the remaining amount.

    1.2 Loan Collection and Repayment.

Loans are repaid directly by the Zip Borrower(s) to Kiva. As Zip Borrowers repay the Loans, Kiva will post a record on the Zip Website of such repayments actually received by Kiva from the Borrowers. Repayments may be made in periodic installments, depending on the terms of the applicable Loan. Except as may be provided in Section 1.5 ("Principal Loss Scenarios"), any amounts actually received by Kiva from a Zip Borrower as repayment by the applicable Zip Borrower(s) will be distributed among the Lenders on a pro rata basis in accordance with the amounts loaned by such Lenders to such Zip Borrower(s). These distributions may, in Kiva's sole discretion, be made periodically or in one lump sum once 100% of all Loan proceeds for a particular Loan have been received by Kiva. Furthermore, please note that timing of distributions to Lenders of any collected repayment may vary and may be materially impacted because of circumstances that, in Kiva's judgment, require Kiva to conduct further reviews with respect to the collected repayments. If, for any reason, Kiva is unable to collect Loan repayments directly from the Zip Borrowers or if Kiva, for any reason, is unable to collect Loan repayments directly from the Zip Borrower(s), repayment of Loan amounts to Lenders could be at risk of partial or total delay or non-repayment and a loss of some or all of a Lender's principal could occur. Neither Trustee(s) nor the Zip Borrower(s) will have direct contractual obligation or liability to pay any Lender any principal, and Kiva is obligated to repay only such Loan principal to the extent actually received by Kiva from a Zip Borrower (subject to the conditions noted above). None of Kiva or any Trustee or Zip Borrower will have any obligation to pay interest on the Loan or other fees or amounts (other than as expressly set forth above) to any Lender in connection with any Loan made on the Zip Website. You understand that you have no right or authority to seek any payments directly from either a Trustee or Zip Borrower.

  36. With all the drinking Jenna does, it would not surprise me to learn she crashed and totaled the Dakota while inebriated. Jenna admits to buying a silly dog shirt while being drunk. What else has Jenna done while drunk that she has not disclosed? Alcoholism is a serious matter.

Jenna, consider Rethinking Drinking, a website by National Institutes of Health.

    http://rethinkingdrinking.niaaa.nih.gov/

Jenna, also see Excess alcohol affecting farm families, By Dr. Mike Rosmann IFT columnist, May 03, 2013

    http://www.iowafarmertoday.com/feature/columnists/farm_and_ranch_life/excess-alcohol-affecting-farm-families/article_29bf8796-b429-11e2-84d4-0019bb2963f4.html

"How do farm and ranch people manage — or not manage — alcohol consumption?

In 1991, Lorrin Walker, Don Warren and Jill Greenwalt published an article entitled "The Good Life on the Ranch, or Myths and Misconceptions, or the Drunk Cowboy Syndrome," which may be as true today as when it was written.

The "Drunk Cowboy Syndrome" applies to farmers as well as ranchers.

Many hard-working ranchers use alcohol to numb physical pain, the authors suggested.

As the workday goes along and they become sore from strenuous physical activities, these ranchers consume alcohol to reduce their sensations of pain, often starting to drink around midday.

Alcohol enables cowboys to keep working. It has created a myth — the authors say — that drinking to deal with pain is acceptable.

As the people who take care of the land and livestock age, they develop more physical pains, such as arthritis and other musculoskeletal issues, and they drink alcohol in ever greater amounts until they "just can’t" any longer.

They model the use of alcohol as acceptable to their children and grandchildren who work with them.

SOMETIMES, RANCHERS use alcohol to avoid psychological pain as well, spouses say. If they drink enough beer or hard liquor, they don’t have to think about things that bother them, even if only temporarily.

Some farmers and ranchers visit the bar on a daily basis or keep a cooler with alcoholic beverages stashed in their pickup trucks. Drinking alcohol has become part of the culture.

Do people involved in agriculture consume more alcohol than persons not engaged in agricultural occupations?

Drs. Jim Merchant and Craig Zwerling and other associates at the University of Iowa have been gathering health risk data from residents of a highly agricultural Iowa county for many years in what has become known as the Keokuk County Rural Health Study (www.kcrhs.org).

While not representative of all the agricultural population, their 2001 report of 1,583 study participants indicated binge drinking was equally frequent among farmers, rural non-farmers and townspeople over 25 years of age. Men (24 percent) were more likely to binge drink than women (9 percent).

Male farmers over 65 years of age were less than half as likely as younger male farmers to report a history of alcohol abuse. Binge drinking decreased with age for both men and women.

HOW MUCH alcohol is consumed by rural youths and what effects does it have? The University of Iowa research team also surveyed binge drinking by youths.

    ReplyDelete
  37. part 2

Binge drinking was defined as consumption of five or more drinks of beer, wine or liquor on the same occasion.

Among 621 youths in the Keokuk County study aged 12-17, 12.8 percent reported an episode of binge drinking during the previous 30 days.

Boys who reported binge drinking were 2.2 times more likely to experience an injury of some kind than boys who did not report binge drinking. Girls who reported binge drinking were 8.1 times more likely to incur an injury than girls who did not report binge drinking. Only 5 percent of the reported injuries occurred on farms.

The Keokuk County study used health interview survey data gathered from 1994-98. More-recent adolescent alcohol use information gathered in 2009 was reported in 2012 by the Maine Rural Health Research Center.

Youths age 12-13 who lived in rural areas were more likely (10.4 percent) than urban youths (9.1 percent) to report binge drinking. As they aged, youthful rural binge drinkers were also more likely to report driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol than urban counterparts.

Rural youths, their families and peers, were less likely to disapprove of youth drinking than urban residents. The survey did not separate youths who lived on farms and ranches from other rural residents.

It is well known inebriation increases the risk of injuries and death while engaged in farming activities, according to a 2010 article in the "American Journal of Industrial Medicine."

Inebriation reduces reaction time, accuracy of motor movements, impulse control and rational thinking, and increases risk-taking. It diminishes the perception of pain and emotional turmoil but simultaneously increases many other negative health consequences.

We have to ask ourselves: "Are drunk cowboys and farmers safe and competent?" Most available evidence says "No."

It's still an issue though especially when she seems so publicly proud of her drinking and the results...impulse buying that completely ugly shirt.

In 1989, you generally had to lock the hubs manually; they didn't lock automatically as they do now. I also wonder if she knows not to drive it in 4WD on bare roads so as not to burn up the transmission and transfer case.

  39. Ugh. My family has several vehicles with farm plates (we run a business, a "real" one that employs a few dozen people). They're used to haul greengoods across our land, and an occasional local delivery of product. PERIOD.

There are significant insurance & plate fee benefits, which is wonderful when your business requires multiple vehicles - a very expensive necessity. There are also strict rules that must be complied with.

If you screw it up and get caught, you can lose ALL of your farm plate benefits. Every time some moron gets "farm plates" for giggles and to look "cowboy cool", they jeopardize the government revoking this privilege/loophole in the DMV requirements for the rest of us.

Not to mention.... keeping a spare vehicle around, when you're strapped for cash, is about the most stupid business decision possible. The moment something is not functional, making more money than it costs, it gets sold. Auction, Craigslist, scrap, whatever. Sold. We're not automobile collectors, we need our equipment to make money.

This makes my head explode. And that tshirt she drunkenly bought off of Amazon prime, while asking people to donate that amount for a second vehicle? WTF.

It also begs the question if office dwellers don't belong on farming blogs then why are most of JW's followers on her blog. A lot of them have said they do not have a farm, but would like one some day. And, even JW did not always live on a farm in the country.

Where you work doesn't matter. I have been a corporate executive, farmer, livestock producer/showman/seller for more than 30 years. One doesn't have anything to do with the other...other than the fact that JW and her followers have no clue what is going on in the farming community, traditional, sustainable or diversified.

Fantasy is fine but eventually you have to live in reality. Wait till she's in her 40's or 50's and things are not going so well. That bridge she'd rather live under won't look so appealing.

I have an observation about those who have firsthand knowledge of poverty, either because they used to be poor or are currently experiencing it. I am in the former category, thank goodness, and I am not going to tell you "how bad I had it." Trust me, it was bad. But I think that many people who describe their financial difficulties in online comments wear it as a badge of honor, and use their status to hector those who they feel aren't "being poor" appropriately. Anyway, my observation is that people who are having, or who have experienced poverty, fall into two camps: Those who have empathy towards others who are facing lean times, and those who are sanctimonious harpies.
Jenna, I've walked a mile in your shoes, and if there was a Kiva when I hit my rough patch, I'd have been all over that like a chicken on a junebug.

Poor is wondering where you will get fresh water from or if you're lucky diluting juice to make it stretch 10x as far. Not pouring booze out. That's liquid gold to the poor.

Poor is limiting traveling because of the expense of gas...if you're fortunate enough to have a car...not purchasing a second vehicle after FLYING a puppy cross country.

    3. They think they don’t have anything to learn. They’re new employees or interns who know everything and don’t need to learn from people who are already doing their jobs well … They insist on doing it their way, even though they fail repeatedly.
