Do you mind if an omnivore asks a question to the vegetarians reading this blog? I do eat quite a few vegetarian and vegan meals because I like the taste, but not one of them is trying to imitate meat. Why do vegetarians eat tofu and other produces disguised as meat? Do you miss the taste of meat?
I've been vegetarian for 17 years and I am not ashamed to say that I love faux meats. Asian Buddhist cuisine has a long history of using them, so those of us who like them are not alone :) I see nothing wrong with enjoying flavors and textures of meat without the cruelty!
I am not sure you understood my question. I didn't ask why you choose to forgo eating meat. I asked why you eat a vegetarian product made to imitate meat? Is it because the product genuinely tastes good? Or because you miss the taste of meat?
I happen to really like tofu in a lot of Asian recipes. This wasn't always the case though. My first introduction to it was in products that were trying to pretend it was meat. These tasted horrible and I have been skeptical of imitation meat since then.
I'm not a vegetarian but I did happen to eat veg chicken nuggets once-- the taste and texture is exactly like regular chicken nuggets. I would expect it's pretty easy to replicate the more processed meat products like hot dogs, nuggets etc.
My omni husband actually prefers some faux meats to real ones. I only eat brands that are delicious... For sure some are gross, but a nice tofurkey and vegenaise sandwich? I see zero problem with this on any level.
I am not a vegetarian, but during veterinary school I could not stomach meat after a day spent in the anatomy lab. Eating fake meat would have been just as bad.
Have you tried the Tofufky Turkey, its not half bad if you do not eat meat.
ReplyDeleteYes...when they were out of the bologna. I prefer the bologna...as in I love it and could eat it for breakfast lunch and dinner.

DeleteVegenaise is soooo much better than nayonaise! The earth balance vegan mayo is good, too :)
ReplyDeleteJust Mayo is my new favorite. And they make flavored mayos in squeezy bottles too - try the chipotle mayo on a sandwich and you won't be sorry!

ReplyDeleteThe taste has nothing to do with when or why I decide not to eat a meat product.
DeleteI love the taste of meat! Hate 99.9% of the industry.

I like the taste of bologna. This product tastes like bologna.
DeleteIt never accrued to me people might be vegetarian or vegan because they simply don't like the taste of animal products....

DeleteI am one of those people. I just don't like the taste/texture of meat. I like vegan/vegetarian products that are supposed to imitate meat even less :)
