a girl, a farm, their journey.
6 month old heifer yaks.
The girls are about the size of an adult newfoundland dog.
Next step is getting them used to haltering and walking on a lead.
Giant adorable fur balls!
Ok, I should have asked Santa for yaks this year. OMG! I just want to squeeze one! -RW
Oh, yeah, I was wondering about the yaks. What's the plan for them-- fiber? Or are they just for fun/pets? They look pretty cool!
Fiber. Potentially meat as the herd expands. I want to try to milk them and ride them eventually!
They look mean??
They are really spunky. I need to post a video. I'm really glad they got them young as we are all yak beginners. In the new year I'll be working a few days a week at this farm. Halter training the yaks and younger alpacas.I believe they will be showing several of the yaks at the farm show in Harrisburg in 2016.
Just don't try to mess with their calves if you breed them. I hear they're quite protective. I've been knocked down by a charolais cow, and that was bad enough. She didn't go in for the kill, but I think a yak would.
Thanks for the reminder! Some species, breeds, and individual animals can be very dangerous moms!
Can't wait for the farm show. They upped the parking this year. Grrrr.
They look so fluffy!!!
Cute!!-G
