Positive thoughts for Duckmama and her daughter and daughters bf

I didn't know where (or even if) to post this. My daughter (age 27) and her SO were traveling to Peru to see the Mayan ruins. On the flight between Orlando (they are from Fairbanks AK) and Panama (layover) my daughter became very ill on the flight.

Her bf rushed her to the hospital in Panama, and she is in ICU diagnosed with Reye's syndrome. This is the deadly disease usually associated with children who take aspirin during/ after a cold flu. My daughter had a cold while she was traveling.

I am in contact with her bf, and even got a call through (tenaciousness here) to the Panamanian hospital and spoke with my daughter. She sounded good, but she is most definitely not out of the woods yet.

I'm just reaching out for your good thoughts. Thank you.

Update:

Thank you all. It's been stressful, but I'm in communication via FB chat with her boyfriend who has been dealing with all this. I did get to talk to her a couple times on the phone, but now hosp. staff says she cannot receive calls. I cannot financially travel there. Today she's getting a spinal tap, as her arms and legs are still weak due to spinal cord swelling. The earliest she can leave there is Thursday. Hoping for the best.

Thinking of you Duckmama.

I'm so sorry you are unable to be there with your daughter.

  3. Hugs and well wishes. Really is difficult not to be there to be on top of things. Hang in there.

  4. Hope things turn out for the best. Assuming they had medical insurance? Tough to not be there to help out. Hope she is better soon.

  5. Thanks for the well wishes. They are shooting for Thursday to fly back to the states, probably to Phoenix. There she will be probably hospitalized again for a bit while the U.S. docs check her out. They will have to get the med records translated, as they are in Spanish. No small task as she's been there for days now.

The did not have international travel med ins., unfortunately. They had to pay upfront thousands of dollars to get her admitted. As it was the weekend, it was doubly hard. They will get reimbursed for hopefully most of it by their U.S. insurance, though.

I really wish I could go there. Since they live in AK and I'm in the lower 48, I have not seen her for three years. Just hoping for her safe return and recovery. Thanks again for your thoughts.

  7. How much would it cost to get you to Phoenix?

  8. Thinking of you Duckmama. It sounds like you and your family are being very strong and making them do the right things. Perhaps she can convalesce at your house? Where are you located?

  9. Phoenix will the perfect place to get her medical records translated, since there is a high hispanic population there and many doctors speak fluent Spanish. Hoping she has a quick recovery and can home home to you soon!

  10. Hi, all. Update. Daughter had last immunoglobulin treatment yesterday. They are observing her today (in Panama), then they are to fly out Friday (tomorrow) night to LA, then transfer to Phoenix. Agree on the translation of the records, HotFlash. I'm sure they'll get that done ASAP when they get there with records in hand.

Julie, I thought of that, too, but haven't broached the subject yet. Just waiting for them to get to the states. Where they live in AK is fairly small, and I'm not sure they have the resources to deal with this. We'll see how she's doing once she gets to Phoenix. Anon 2:07, thank you for asking. I'm going to see how long she actually has to stay in Phoenix, though.

Thank you all for the well wishes, and will update when she is examined here in the states.

  12. Yay! They're in the states! Daughter is in Phoenix at a large facility totally equipped to deal with her condition. She will be there a while (don't know how long) as she needs rehab to learn to walk again. Her bf has been amazing supporting her and taking care of business. They are so happy to be able to communicate now, in English!

She did tell me she just needs to focus on getting better, and that we can get together after she is well. :-( She's very independent, and private. I thought she would say that. Oh well, at least I get to talk to her on the phone now as soon as she gets settled.

Thank you all for your ongoing support. I truly appreciate it. Thank you Meredith, especially, for allowing me to post about this. Most benevolent and generous of you.

  13. Duckmama,

So glad to hear things are getting better for your daughter. Being a parent isn't for the faint of heart is it?

  14. Thank you! Oh, P.S. her diagnosis (unfortunately) is Guillain-Barre syndrome, not Reye's. Difficult to communicate there when you don't speak Spanish.
