I was led to your site because of the pigs (I'm a piggy fan too) but having perused the postings I must confess to being perplexed with your fixation on Cold Antler Farm. I have been there and found all of the animals well cared for and in appropriate quarters. I shall not be back as I find some of your post rather mean-spirited and there is enough of that in the world. You have more to offer the world. Let it go. Peace and Blessed Be.
Hi Kathy, I am not Meredith, but if I may....many of the posts and comments here display a high level of frustration for what Jenna is doing at Cold Antler Farm. Most of us were drawn into her story back when she was renting a cabin in Vermont, and were inspired and certainly entertained by her writings.
Flash forward to many incidents which happened along the way...when this author of a book on how to care for chicks has lost flock after flock of chickens from not bothering to protect them against predators or, in the case of the adult chickens, not even securing them at night, leaving them wide open to predation. She then sits outside with a shotgun, in order to take out the predator eating the free chicken lunch she left out. That is neither responsible nor humane behavior, in my opinion. Or what about the lamb born unable to walk, which she brought inside the warm house for a couple of days, shot with pro-pen, then left out in the field so she could drive around all day, for several days, attempting to trap a hawk? My gosh -- get the vet out or put it down, but don't let it suffer, sitting out in a field for days unable to move! Now take those things and intersperse them with regular posts asking for money so it can all continue. Can you see why people are frustrated? Are you also aware that people who paid for wool in her CSA are claiming they never received any product or a refund? I am surprised you are not aware of any of this, because if I am not mistaken, you are the same Kathy H. who holds prepping workshops with Jenna at her property, yes?
Hi Meredith - I've got a question about pigs. From reading your blog, I can see how fond you are of them. Is it hard for you when it is time for slaughter? I have only had pets (dogs, cats, rabbits), never livestock, so I don't know how it feels. My daughter had rabbits and was in 4H, but all those rabbits were pets too.
I grew up in the suburbs, and never had any kind of farm exposure. I'd be interested in hearing from you or anyone else with livestock.
I have been to Jenna's place as well. I am not sure what you mean by well cared for an in appropriate quarters, but let me tell you- the sheep are thin, the horses not groomed, feet not picked, miles HIGH old hay in there for the sheep and the cages for the rabbits are absolutely disgusting. She needs to keep better care of her animals if she actually wants anyone to believe in her.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh....so sweet.
